I was shocked to learn the other day that after a surveillance drone went down in Iran, President Obama was presented with the options to retrieve or destroy this important device - and he chose to do nothing (“Obama appeals to Iran to give back U.S. drone,” Web, Monday).

The reason offered was that he was afraid Iran would consider it an act of war. Does Mr . Obama mean like the war they declared on the West some time ago and that they continue to declare as they kill our citizens and allies around the globe?

This drone contained the most sophisticated battlefield-surveillance hardware and software the United States has in play. To allow it to fall into the hands of Iran, which will no doubt sell it to China or Russia (or both), is an outrage and shows a complete lack of courage and basic instinct to defend America.

We must remember, of course, that this is the same president who has given unprecedented access to a left-wing movie company to produce a film for release in October 2012 showing how much courage and leadership he had in deciding to take out Osama bin Laden. The photo of our leader huddled in the Situation Room showed a man looking like a little boy who was afraid of what was going to happen and didn’t want to be seen.

Now that true leadership had to be shown on short notice, Mr. Obama failed to take the necessary steps to protect some of America’s biggest and best secrets. He literally gave away the keys to the technology kingdom in allowing that drone to fall into enemy hands.
