Enough Newt-bashing, already, by Mitt Romney, Michael Savage, Chris Christie, Charles Krauthammer, et. al (“Savage offers Gingrich $1 million to drop out,” Web, Monday).

These are supposed to be experienced, smart, politically minded individuals. Then why are they acting this way, where Newt Gingrich’s run for president is concerned? I get it: They don’t like Mr. Gingrich, and that is their right. But do they dislike him more than they want to defeat President Obama in 2012? It sure seems so.

I wonder if these smart guys have given even a bit of thought to how their attacks on Mr. Gingrich will be used by Mr. Obama in the general election, should Mr. Gingrich be the GOP nominee. If they all favor Mitt Romney, perhaps they should outline to the voting public why we ought to elect him.

But they should stop these horrid personal attacks on Mr. Gingrich. Those lobbing these attacks look and sound like Democrats. Instead, they should tell us why we should vote for Mr. Romney, not why we shouldn’t vote for Mr. Gingrich. I am 66 years old, and the attacks being leveled at Mr. Gingrich are the most negative personal attacks on a GOP candidate by conservatives that I have ever witnessed.

Those who continue to attack Mr. Gingrich are acting like spoiled little brats throwing a temper tantrum because things are not going their way. Every negative attack by career Republicans works in favor of Mr. Gingrich, not against him. Have they seen the polls lately? We GOP voters will have only one major issue on our minds when we head to the polls next November: Defeat Mr. Obama.

It sure would be nice if the GOP actually worked with us to reach that goal, not against us.
