ASHBURN, VA. (AP) - Washington Redskins lead rusher Ryan Torain will miss 7 to 10 days after fracturing his left hand and the newly acquired running back Tim Hightower is ready for a bigger workload.
Torain was tackled on Wednesday during practice and needed four screws in his third metacarpal.
Hightower practiced Thursday for the first time during training camp, making an explosive cut to the left side on his first carry. He was unable to practice earlier because newly signed free agents couldn’t do so prior to the ratification of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
For the Redskins to stay on track during Torain’s absence, Hightower likely will need to take an expanded role.
The team opens their preseason schedule on Aug. 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
