Eight Hurricanes forced to sit out season opener
CORAL GABLES, FLA. | The NCAA ruled Tuesday that eight Miami players must sit out games and repay benefits in order to play for the Hurricanes again. Starting quarterback Jacory Harris and four other players must sit out one game and make repayment.
Olivier Vernon will miss six games and repay $1,200. Ray Ray Armstrong and Dyron Dye will sit out four games. Marcus Forston, Sean Spence, Adewale Ojomo and Travis Benjamin will sit out one game.
The suspensions largely are the result of allegations made by former booster Nevin Shapiro to Yahoo! Sports for a story published Aug. 16. Shapiro, a convicted Ponzi scheme architect, said he entertained players at his $6 million home, took them to dinners and handed out cash prizes at bowling tournaments.

Robles DQ’d in 110 hurdles; gold goes to Richardson
DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA | One of the most anticipated events of the world championships turned into one of the most controversial, with Olympic champion Dayron Robles disqualified for interfering with Chinese star Liu Xiang in a 110-meter hurdle race awarded to Jason Richardson of the United States.
Robles finished first, but field judges disqualified the Cuban. Richardson benefited when Liu slowed down, and crossed the finish line second.
Robles finished in 13.14 seconds, followed by Richardson in 13.16 and Liu in 13.27. American David Oliver was a pre-race favorite but crossed the line fifth.
Grenada’s Kirani James leaned across the line to win the gold medal in the 400 meters, upstaging reigning titleholder LaShawn Merritt (Portsmouth, Va.). Merritt was competing in his first major meet since serving a 21-month suspension for using a banned substance that his lawyer said was the result of a male-enhancement product.

Maryland keeps Frese in fold with multiyear deal
Maryland and women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese have agreed on a multiyear contract extension, the school announced Tuesday.
Frese, whose previous contract was to expire in 2013, is now signed through 2017 and could add up to four more years if Maryland meets athletic and academic benchmarks.
Frese is 221-81 (.732) in nine seasons at Maryland. She led the Terrapins to the 2006 NCAA title and has made seven NCAA appearances during her tenure in College Park. The Terps went 24-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season.
