Maryland and women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese have agreed on a multi-year contract extension, the school announced Tuesday.
Frese, whose previous contract was to expire in 2013, is now signed through 2017 and could add up to four more years if Maryland meets athletic and academic benchmarks.
Frese’s latest contract was not immediately available. However, Maryland has made one-year extensions based on athletic and academic achievements a part of basketball coaching contracts in the recent past.
Former men’s basketball coach Gary Williams had a clause in his last contract that automatically added a year to his deal in any year his team both reached the NCAA tournament and achieved the NCAA’s cut score in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) report.
According to the terms of her previous contract, Frese earned more than $775,000 in guaranteed compensation last season. A copy of that contract, which was signed in 2007, was obtained through an open records request.
Frese is 221-81 (.732) in nine seasons at Maryland. She led the Terrapins to the 2006 NCAA title, and has made seven NCAA appearances during her tenure in College Park. Maryland reached the regional finals in 2008 and 2009 in addition to its national title run, and won the ACC tournament in 2009.
The Terps went 24-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. Maryland returns four starters and seven of its top eight scorers from that team this year.
In 12 seasons overall (including stops at Ball State and Minnesota), Frese is 278-111 (.715) with eight NCAA tournament appearances.
