Washington Redskins rookie defensive end Jarvis Jenkins is expected to miss the 2011 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Thursday’s preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
It’s a significant blow because Jenkins was one of the Redskins’ most promising rookies during training camp. His power and quickness were such that coaches considered him the top reserve up front. He started the last two preseason games in place of Adam Carriker (severe blisters).
Jenkins, a second-round draft pick, had an MRI Friday morning and announced the result on his Twitter account.
“Redskin fans thanks for the support I love you all…unfortunately it is a ACL tear….,” he wrote. “I’m gonna work harder than I’ve ever worked to get back I love this game too much.”
Jenkins injured his knee when he planted while trying to anchor against Ravens tackle Jah Reid. His knee buckled and he fell to the ground. He was not hit below the waist.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is scheduled to discuss the situation when he meets with reporters on Saturday. ACL tears typically require surgery and 6 to 12 months of rehabilitation.
Jenkins’ injury could open a roster spot for veteran Darrion Scott or first-year lineman Doug Worthington. Both might make the team, as well.
Scott replaced Jenkins in Thursday’s game. Worthington, who spent some of his rookie campaign last year on Tampa Bay’s practice squad, has shown fairly well at the point of attack during preseason games.
The Redskins kept eight defensive linemen on their 53-man roster last September.
Carriker, nose tackle Barry Cofield and defensive end Stephen Bowen are the projected starters. Backup nose tackle Anthony Bryant’s spot seems secure. End Kedric Golston started last season and has come off the bench this preseason.
