The strongest aftershock yet from Tuesday’s 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck in Virginia overnight.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports that a 4.5-magnitude quake occurred about 36 miles northwest of Richmond at about 1:07 a.m. Thursday. That aftershock followed a 2.5-magnitude aftershock that occurred about an hour earlier, at 12:06 a.m.
The aftershocks bring to five the number that have hit the region in the wake of the original quake just outside of Mineral, Va.
Officials say the aftershocks are to be expected and could continue for weeks.
