Phillies’ Rollins placed on DL with strained groin

PHILADELPHIA — Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins went on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a groin strain, and All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco was activated from the DL.

Rollins strained his right groin in a loss at Washington on Sunday. The former NL MVP had never been on the DL before 2008, but this is his fourth stint in four years. He’s hitting .268 with 14 homers, 58 RBI and 28 stolen bases. He’s committed just five errors this season.

c The Cleveland Indians put designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right foot. He was sidelined for a month until mid-June with a strained right oblique. In 82 games, he is hitting .281 with 11 homers and 49 RBI.

USOC won’t submit bid for 2020 Summer Games

The U.S. Olympic Committee has notified all interested cities that it will not submit a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Chicago, New York and Dallas were among those that had expressed interest in putting forth a bid to host the games, but any bid was contingent upon the USOC working out a long-simmering revenue-sharing deal with the International Olympic Committee.

USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said Monday on Twitter that “I can confirm the US will not be bidding for the 2020 Olympic Games.” He told the Associated Press the cities that had expressed interest were notified over the weekend that no bid would happen.

Father of Chelsea’s Mikel safe after kidnapping

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The kidnapped father of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was freed Monday after detectives traced him to a sprawling city in northern Nigeria and arrested his abductors.

Michael Obi was kidnapped Aug. 12 while on his way home from work in the central Nigerian city of Jos.

Michael Obi’s abduction came after a Forbes magazine survey in June listed John Obi Mikel as the seventh highest-paid African player in Europe at $5.8 million a year.

Holmes to have brain surgery, expected out three months

EDISON, N.J. — J.B. Holmes withdrew from the Barclays as he prepares to have brain surgery.

Holmes has been diagnosed with structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance. He has been dealing with vertigo-like symptoms since May.

Holmes said the surgery a low-risk procedure, and the two-time PGA Tour winner he should be able to return to competition after about three months.

Truck series driver suspended for substance abuse

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR suspended Craftsman Truck Series driver Shane Sieg on Monday for violating the substance abuse policy. He’s the second driver from NASCAR’s top three national series to be suspended since the random drug testing policy was adopted in 2009. Jeremy Mayfield was the first driver suspended. He failed a random test in May 2009.
