MADRID (AP) - Spanish soccer players representing all 42 teams in the top two divisions are backing the first strike in 27 years this weekend.
The strike postponed the start of the Spanish league season after talks about salaries failed this week.
The Spanish league says it will meet with Association of Spanish Football Players (AFE) on Monday to “continue the open dialogue to try and unblock the situation of the strike called by the AFE.”
The players association wants improved salary guarantees and the payment of $72 million that clubs owe in unpaid salaries to more than 200 players.
The AFE plans to extend the strike to next weekend if a deal is not reached.
