NEW YORK (AP) - Two-time defending U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters will not go for three in a row this year because of a stomach muscle injury.

Clijsters, who missed Wimbledon and much of the summer with an ankle injury, hurt her stomach during a tournament in Toronto this month. In a statement Friday, she said “two weeks of rehab is not enough to heal this injury.”

Clijsters won the Australian Open this year, but only made it to the second round of the French.

In 2009, she came back after taking two years off to have a baby, and became the first unseeded woman to win the U.S. Open. She won it for the second straight time in 2010. With the win in Melbourne this year, she now has four Grand Slam titles.
