ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Ndamukong Suh was fined $20,000 by the NFL on Wednesday for a late hit on Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, the third penalty of its kind for the Detroit Lions defensive end in the past year.

Suh didn’t like it much: He responded on his Twitter account before practice: “$20,000REALLY???!!!”

The reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year was fined twice last year for roughing up quarterbacks, including Chicago’s Jay Cutler during the regular season and Cleveland’s Jake Delhomme in a preseason game.

Former first-rounder Maybin gets fresh start with Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Aaron Maybin is getting a second chance to jumpstart his career with the New York Jets, who reached an agreement in principle Wednesday with the former Buffalo Bills first-round pick, pending a physical..

The linebacker was waived by Buffalo on Monday after two disappointing seasons in which he had no sacks and never was in the starting lineup. The Jets will give Maybin the opportunity to fulfill the potential he showed when the Bills made him the 11th overall pick in 2009 out of Penn State.

Panthers get first look at Newton as a starter

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Top draft pick Cam Newton will start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers on Friday in their second preseason game.

Coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Jimmy Clausen, who started last week against the New York Giants, would get snaps with the first-team offense against the Miami Dolphins. Rivera said the first-team offense would play about a half.

Around the league

* New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck missed the end of practice Wednesday because of a sore Achilles tendon. The defensive captain downplayed the injury. Tuck had 99 tackles and 11 1/2 sacks last season, sharing the team lead in the latter with fellow defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

* Cleveland Browns starting left guard Eric Steinbach left practice with a back injury that’s not believed to be serious. Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Steinbach’s back tightened up. Also, Shurmur downplayed hamstring injuries to running back Peyton Hillis and safety T.J. Ward.

* The Cincinnati Bengals released defensive tackle Tank Johnson, who missed nine games last season with a knee injury. Johnson, 29, has been limited during training camp and didn’t play in Cincinnati’s preseason opener last Friday, a 34-3 loss in Detroit.

* The San Francisco 49ers added a veteran to the quarterback competition, signing Josh McCown to a one-year deal. McCown, 32, already was on the field throwing passes during Wednesday’s practice. He was with the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials last year.
