EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora told the Associated Press that he will practice with the New York Giants on Monday.
In an email to the AP on Sunday evening, Umenyiora said he will play under the terms of his current contract, which will play him $7.1 million over the next two seasons.
Umenyiora, 29, said the Giants offered to put incentives in his deal, but he rejected them because he felt the terms were unacceptable.
Umenyiora says his decision to return was influenced by his feelings for his teammates, coaches and the fans.
The nine-year NFL veteran hasn’t practiced since reporting to training camp July 30, a day late. He has been bothered by a sore knee for more than a week but was cleared this week for action.
Ravens envision Evans as downfield presence
BUFFALO, N.Y. — In receiver Lee Evans, the Baltimore Ravens acquired a proven veteran to play alongside Anquan Boldin.
Evans is a seven-year veteran, who is a downfield threat with two 1,000-yard seasons. He is expected to immediately step into the No. 2 role in Baltimore to improve a receiving attack after the Ravens released Derrick Mason and tight end Todd Heap last month.
By trading Evans for a fourth-round draft pick Friday, the Buffalo Bills are putting their trust in a young group of receivers, who are suddenly minus their respected leader and five-time captain.
“We’re excited about getting Lee Evans,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said a day after Baltimore opened the preseason with a 13-6 loss to Philadelphia on Thursday. “He’s a proven player in this league, and a quality person who will fit in well on our team.”
Jets WR Burress won’t play against Texans
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — It’s a no go for Plaxico Burress in the New York Jets’ preseason opener.
An MRI on Friday revealed that the wide receiver has a sprained left ankle, and he won’t play against the Texans on Monday or even fly with the team to Houston.
Burress had the MRI on his left ankle, which he rolled while running routes last week, and he said “it’s just a classic tweak, a classic sprain.” He added that it’s “nothing serious.”
Meanwhile, center Nick Mangold is day to day after suffering a stinger in practice Thursday that caused some temporary numbness in one of his arms.
“That’s always a little disconcerting,” he said. “It always shoots a shock to the system, but it seems to be doing better today.”
Mangold could participate in individual drills, but not 11-on-11s, and it was uncertain if he’ll be able to play in Houston.
Broncos’ Prater facing charges following accident
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater is facing a charge of drunken driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Police Chief John Jackson said Prater was involved in a minor, non-injury accident in a hotel parking lot on Aug. 2. He said Prater was cooperative, adding: “He was not in any way resistant or argumentative. We cited and released him, like we would do with anybody else.”
Prater is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 5.
The fifth-year pro from Central Florida was 3-for-3 on field goals in the Broncos’ preseason opener Thursday night at Dallas.
