Two women were killed in an early Friday morning car crash along Southern Avenue in the District, officials said.

The crash occured around 4:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Southern Avenue, just across the street from the United Medical Center, said the District’s Fire and EMS Department spokesman Pete Piringer.

A Mercedes travelling at a high rate of speed struck a pole in front of the hospital and burst into flames, Mr. Piringer said. The car came to rest against another pole and the two female victims were trapped inside the car.

They died at the scene of the accident.

The women have not been identified yet by the Metropolitan Police Department, which is investigating the crash.
