OAKLAND, CALIF. (AP) - Athletics’ starter Brandon McCarthy left Friday night’s game against the Texas Rangers after getting hit by a line drive on the outside of his right knee by Endy Chavez with one out in the fourth inning.

The ball ricocheted into the visiting bullpen down the right field line, allowing Chavez to reach second. McCarthy immediately fell to the ground in obvious pain.

He left after trainers and A’s manager Bob Melvin spent several minutes with him in front of the mound. He walked off the field under his own power but with a limp.

Right-hander Trystan Magnuson replaced McCarthy, who left with the Rangers leading, 6-0.
