CHICAGO (AP) - Washington’s Michael Morse had to leave Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Morse went to the hospital for x-rays. “His whole arm was shaking,” Johnson said. “It got him right on the bone and usually that will let up but that one didn’t seem to let up. I hope everything’s going to be all right.”
When Ryan Dempster’s pitch hit him, Morse walked to first base, where he doubled over in pain as the Nationals’ training staff and Johnson came onto the field to check on him. After a couple of minutes, Morse was removed for pinch runner Jonny Gomes.
Morse, the Nationals’ starting first baseman, has enjoyed a breakout season. He entered Thursday game hitting .320 with 20 home runs and 68 RBI.
“I thought it was the funny bone, but it must have hit more than the funny bone because the muscles in his arm were reacting kind of erratically,” Johnson said.
