The political courage of Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is significant (“GOP proposes real spending cut,” Comment & Analysis, Wednesday).

Mr. Ryan is clearly putting our country ahead of his own political future. His plan not only touches the dreaded “third rail” of politics, Social Security and Medicare - it challenges all spending in a meaningful way, which is what is needed if we are to overcome this terrible financial situation in which America has found itself in recent years.

It seems the main goal of most politicians is re-election rather than putting the country first. In the midst of these self-serving jackals steps Mr. Ryan with action over rhetoric. Men of real courage and vision are often savagely attacked in an effort to discredit and neuter their efforts; I expect this attack against the man and his program will begin soon.

While I am encouraged that a man of courage and vision has finally stepped forward, my cynical nature doubts that he can overcome the bought-and-paid-for throng. However, to me, Mr. Ryan is a national hero, and we should all support him in any way we can.
