BAGHDAD (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Mr. Gates has arrived in Baghdad for meetings with Iraqi government officials and U.S. military commanders.

Mr. Gates is assessing Iraq’s progress toward filling still-vacant, key government positions, including minister of defense, and the U.S. military’s planning for completion of its withdrawal by year’s end.

This is Mr. Gates’ first time in Iraq since last September. He plans to include a trip to northern Iraq during his three-day visit.
