Gaga, Tyler the Creator up for new MTV awards

Lady Gaga and Tyler the Creator lead MTV’s newly inaugurated O Music Awards with three nominations each, Associated Press reports.

MTV announced Tuesday the categories and nominees for its new Web-based awards show, a celebration of digital music. Categories include best fan cover, most viral dance and best music hashtag meme.

Lady Gaga and rapper Tyler the Creator are among the nominees for most innovative artist and must-follow artist on Twitter. Lady Gaga is also nominated for favorite animated GIF, a kind of avatar. Tyler the Creator, of the much-buzzed-about hip-hop group Odd Future, also is nominated for his remix of Lykke Li’s “Follow Rivers.”

Winners will be decided by fan voting in social media, with the results shown in real time. The awards will be presented in a live hourlong webcast April 28 on MTV websites and mobile apps. As a reference to the rapidly shifting online world, even the “O” in the OMAs is being left undefined and open to interpretation by viewers.

“Some elements of this will be experimental,” said Dermot McCormack, head of digital media at MTV Music Group. “If there is such a thing as a beta award show, this is it.”

Rutgers pays Snooki more than Nobel winner

The pouf is mightier than the pen when it comes to speaking fees at New Jersey’s largest university, Associated Press reports.

The Rutgers University Programming Association paid Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of the reality TV show “Jersey Shore” $32,000 last week to dish on her hairstyle, fist pumps, as well as the “GTL” — gym, tanning, laundry — lifestyle.

That’s $2,000 more than the $30,000 the university is paying Nobel-winning novelist Toni Morrison to deliver Rutgers’ commencement address in May.

Money for Miss Polizzi’s appearance came from the mandatory student activity fee.

Snooki’s advice to students: “Study hard, but party harder.”

Kirstie Alley, ’DWTS’ partner score well despite fall

Kirstie Alley and “Dancing With the Stars” partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy took a tumble in the ballroom during the live performance show.

Just seconds into their rumba routine to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on Monday, Mr. Chmerkovskiy fell to the floor, taking the 60-year-old actress down with him.

A limping, apologetic Mr. Chmerkovskiy later told the judges that his thigh “just gave out.”

After a few moments the pair recovered and went on to earn the praise of the judges and a score of 21 — one point higher than their score for last week’s quickstep.
