Somebody’s likely suffering from the rising cost of college tuition, but it doesn’t seem to be the presidents of five Virginia universities who made it on top-paid lists compiled by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger’s $744,892 package places him eighth on a top-10 list, based on total cost of employment, while George Mason University President Alan G. Merten ranks 10th for total compensation, earning $633,631.
Three other presidents of Virginia schools were included in the survey, which ranked 185 presidents of schools with more than 10,000 students, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
- University of Virginia President John T. Casteen (he retired last summer): total compensation, $487,000, total cost of employment, $703,648.
- Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao: total compensation, $488,500, total cost of employment, $665,804.
- Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick: total compensation, $312,000, total cost of employment, $347,127.
All of their salaries fall far short of the $1.8 million package of Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee, who retains his No.1 ranking from last year.
