NEW YORK (AP) - The publisher of a biography of Harper Lee is standing by its assertion that the author of “To Kill a Mockingbird” cooperated with the book.
Earlier this week, Penguin Press announced it had acquired a book by former Chicago Tribune reporter Marja Mills called “The Mockingbird Next Door: Life With Harper Lee.”
The publisher said the book was written with “direct access” to Lee, who rarely talks to the press.
Lee then issued a statement saying she had not “authorized such a book” or “willingly participated.”
But Penguin on Friday released a letter from Mills to the author’s sister, Alice Lee, confirming that Alice and Harper Lee had cooperated. The letter is signed by Alice Lee.
