IRVING, TEXAS (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys have taken linebacker Bruce Carter from North Carolina with the 40th overall pick.
The second-round pick Friday was the first defensive player taken by the Cowboys for new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
The 6-foot-2, 233-pound Carter was an outside linebacker at North Carolina, but likely will play inside linebacker for the Cowboys. Carter is coming off a torn left ACL late in the 2010 season.
With the ninth overall pick Thursday night, the Cowboys selected offensive tackle Tyron Smith from Southern Cal. It was the first time under Jerry Jones’ ownership that Dallas used a first-round pick on an offensive lineman.
