We are bombarded daily with comments from our lawmakers and leaders about the need to stop federal overspending (“Obama campaigns for deficit-reduction plan,” Politics, Wednesday).

I have a quick, simple solution: We, the taxpayers who have long been paying the wages, bonuses, benefits and holidays for all government employees (including the unions) should dole out less. Instead of these state and federal employees simply sitting back and trying to ride out the dreaded situation, I suggest they all sacrifice a little by having their salaries cut between 5 percent and 10 percent. Surely that amount would do some good for our nation’s economic health.
