WASHINGTON (AP) — Two protesters were arrested during weekend demonstrations at the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.
Jeffrey Light, a lawyer for the activists, said one demonstrator was arrested for alleged destruction of property and the other for disorderly conduct. He said both have been released.
The demonstrators marched around downtown Washington on Saturday afternoon and then attended a concert at night. An additional march was planned for downtown late Saturday into early Sunday morning.
The activists are calling for debt relief to poor countries and other changes to the international economy.
Police say streets around Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest surrounding the IMF and World Bank will be closed through Sunday afternoon. Emergency parking restrictions also will be in place.
