ROME (AP) - Galileo has been honored with a multimedia art exhibit that includes an installation from the Vatican _ 400 years after the astronomer condemned by the Catholic Church first demonstrated his telescope to scholars.

The event took place Thursday night at the American Academy in Rome, a research center for the arts and humanities whose gardens lie on the exact spot where, on the night of April 14, 1611, Galileo showed off his telescope.

Organizers said the event was designed to honor Galileo with art and humanities _ and show that the Vatican isn’t hostile to science.
