The town of Chevy Chase, Md., conjures visions of charming narrow streets and old-fashioned, classic homes with front porches, dormer windows and white picket fences. Close to the border of the District and near Friendship Heights and Bethesda, Md., this neighborhood has long been sought after for its blend of small-town ambience, sophistication and proximity to the nation’s capital.

While many residents are drawn to the shops and restaurants in the area, Chevy Chase homeowners also have easy access to parks, playgrounds and walking trails, including the Capital Crescent Trail, which stretches from Silver Spring, Md., to Georgetown.

Incorporated in 1918, Chevy Chase has about 3,000 residents and 1,032 homes. The town council works to maintain the natural beauty of the town, which was developed primarily after World War I, when cars made living outside the city easier.

Many of the homes in Chevy Chase date to the 1920s and 1930s. The Native Canopy Tree Planting Program, which aims to plant 130 new trees in the town each year, enables the local government to purchase trees to be cared for by neighborhood residents.

While the historic homes provide the architectural imprint for Chevy Chase, newer homes that blend with the neighboring homes yet meet the highest standards for modern living have been built on infill lots.

Chase Builders recently completed the home at 4013 Thornapple St. in Chevy Chase, a stone-and-stucco Colonial-style residence on the market for $1,999,000. The design of this home, with its homey front porch and varied roof lines, fits easily with its neighbors.

This three-level single-family home rests on a site of 7,200 square feet, with a front lawn and garden, a deep, covered front porch with columns, and a fully fenced backyard with a stone patio, a lawn and garden beds. The home has an attached two-car garage.

Inside, Chase Builders used high-end finishes and classic design elements to create a comfortable, yet sophisticated, home. Hardwood flooring, crown molding, recessed lighting and tall windows blend to provide an elegant backdrop for any decorative style.

From the front porch, guests can be welcomed in the foyer, which has French doors leading into the den or home office. The den has hardwood flooring, built-in bookcases and cabinets and double windows on each side of the room. On the opposite side of the foyer is the living room, which shares a two-sided gas fireplace with the formal dining room. Each room has a tray ceiling.

A swinging door links the dining room with the kitchen, a warm room with a furniture-grade center island and breakfast bar, a walk-in pantry, granite counters, white and glass-front cabinets, crown molding, and recessed lighting. The kitchen has a wall of windows facing the backyard and a glass door to the patio.

The kitchen opens to the family room, which has a coffered ceiling, a wood-burning fireplace, a built-in media center and a wall of French doors that open to the patio.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has a coffered ceiling and hardwood flooring, plus a charming sloped ceiling that frames a sitting area with a box bay window. The adjacent master bath has a whirlpool tub, an oversized shower with a seat and two vanities. The master suite also has two walk-in closets.

The second and third bedrooms share a connecting bath with a double-sink vanity, while the fourth bedroom has a private full bath. The upper level also has two linen closets and a laundry room.

The finished lower level has a recreation room with a gas fireplace, a fifth bedroom and a full bath. This level also has a mudroom off the garage with a bench and a walk-in closet.
