FORT MYERS, FLA. (AP) - Sammy Watkins has an impressive resume.
The wide receiver has a scored a touchdown in all 18 varsity games he has appeared in at South Fort Myers High school _ a total of 38 touchdowns.
He caught 46 passes for 1,192 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior.
At 6-foot-2 and 192 pounds, he’s been clocked at a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash. He’s bench-pressing close to 300 pounds and power cleans 275.
“He’s just a physical specimen,” said coach Grant Redhead.
Watkins started his career as a safety, where he also has been impressive. During last year’s spring game against Immokalee, he made a one-handed interception and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown.
“It wasn’t an easy one-handed catch, but he makes a lot of those,” Redhead said. “That was just a phenomenal catch. We always knew he would be special. He just amazes us.”
Colleges across the country have been recruiting him including Miami, Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Michigan, Auburn, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and USC.
Clemson is a school that recently has made an impression on Watkins following an unofficial visit.
“I liked it up there because it is real laid back,” Watkins said.
Growing up, Watkins says he was a Miami fan, but he has not visited the UM campus because of scheduling conflicts.
“I am still very interested in Miami,” Watkins said.
Sammy’s older brother, Jaylen Watkins, is a cornerback at Florida.
“People say I am going to go there because Jaylen is there, but it is my decision and Jaylen doesn’t have anything to do with my decision,” Sammy said. “He tells me to go where I feel comfortable.”
Redhead anticipates Watkins to narrow his list down by the end of September and a decision is likely to come before signing day.
“When he knows that he’s in the right place, I told him that you’re not going to be one of those guys with five hats in front of him,” Redhead said.
Watkins will look to continue to his touchdown streak when the regular season begins on Sept. 3.
