How did you get started in real estate? I started out as an investor. In looking for suitable properties, I spoke to a lot of Realtors, and along the way realized a career in real estate sales gave me an opportunity to combine my interests in real estate with my sales and marketing background. I got my license in 2001 and was my office’s Rookie of the Year. My brother, Steve, joined me the following year, and we formally launched the Wydler Brothers Realty Team a couple of years later. Today we are one of the top-producing teams in the region. Steve heads the McLean office; I head the Bethesda team, and we have a great team 13 people strong. We are ranked No. 2 out of 10,000 Long & Foster agents (YTD 2010) and love what we do!
How long have you been with the current company? Nine years
Licenses and designations: Real estate broker in Maryland, Virginia and the District
Associations: Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors, Northern Virginia Association of Realtors
Awards: Best Dad, Father’s Day 2010 - I came in first place in a field of one
Greatest accomplishment in the past 12 months: With the help of family and friends, we were able to organize a surprise 70th birthday party for my mom. (She had no clue!)
Area of specialty: We specialize in fine homes and condominiums throughout Northwest Washington and the close-in suburbs of Maryland and Northern Virginia.
Highest-priced home sold: We sold a home in Great Falls for $4,300,000. We also handled the sales for a $6,000,000 condo project in the District last year.
Most memorable house: There are so many I’ve seen over the years. Could it be the $4,000,000 one-bedroom bachelor pad in Georgetown, or the two-bedroom condo that had 25 birds flying free? Actually, I think the most memorable is also my favorite. It was built by one of the District’s premier home builders and has the nicest family room/kitchen combination I’ve ever seen, not to mention an indoor basketball court!
Worst experience buying or selling a house: Two weeks prior to closing on one of my listings in Chevy Chase, Md., the owner called to tell me a tree fell on her house. I thought she was joking. She wasn’t. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We worked with the insurance company and terrific contractors and were somehow able to repair the damage and settle on time!
Age: 44
Family: Wife and two kids
Pets: Traded in two border collies for three allergy-free fish and a frog. Unfortunately, the frog needs replacement from time to time.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University, 1988; master of business administration from Harvard University, 1993
Community affiliations/community service/outside interests: I’m actively involved in several alumni organizations, and when I’m not on the DL with bad knees, enjoy a (not-so) competitive game of tennis.
Last book read: “Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant” by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne
Last movie seen: “Grown-Ups” with my 11-year-old son
What kind of car do you drive? A Lexus hybrid - cliche I know, but it is the best car I’ve ever owned
Describe your personal dream house: I’m living in it - it includes a happy wife and two amazing children.
