PHILADELPHIA (AP) — President Obama told the nation’s students in a back-to-school speech on Tuesday that hard work, discipline and drive are critical to their success.
“Nobody gets to write your destiny but you,” Mr. Obama said.
The president delivered his second annual back-to-school speech in Philadelphia, but this time without the controversy that surrounded the first one. Last year, some conservatives accused Mr. Obama of trying to foist a political agenda on children, and some parents threatened to pull their children from class.
Delivering a tough-love message, Mr. Obama told students that their job was to show up on time, pay attention in class, do their homework, study and stay out of trouble.
He spoke at the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School.
