ARLINGTON, TEXAS (AP) - Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington is trying his best to play down the significance of a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees.

Washington says it only means the Rangers “played for three days better than they did.” Though he adds it’s obvious that Texas can play with anybody on certain days.

If AL West-leading Texas can do that again next month, it could win a playoff series for the first time. Even if the Rangers again have to face New York, the team that knocked them out of the postseason all three times they made it in the late 1990s.

With 19 regular-season games left, the Rangers have an 8 1/2-game lead over Oakland in the AL West. They’ve won five straight since losing five in a row.
