The Friday letter to the editor “Israel a buffer against Iranian insanity” could not be further from the truth.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is neither a madman nor a threat to Israel or the United States. In fact, Iran has tried repeatedly to engage in serious, detailed negotiations with the United States, only to be rejected every time.

We should be dialoguing and trading with Iran, not threatening it with harsher sanctions or military action. The root cause of the violence in the Middle East continues to be Israel’s brutal occupation and oppression of the Palestinians. Our support of Israel and its occupation causes us to be hated by terrorists around the world. Rather than being a strategic ally of ours, Israel is a very expensive and dangerous liability for us.
