TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Blue Jays appear set to hire a manager, with Boston Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell expected to get the job. Farrell has never managed in the majors and would succeed Cito Gaston, who retired after the season.
The team has scheduled an afternoon news conference, although it did not give a reason. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos would not confirm the hiring to The Associated Press on Monday.
On Sunday, Red Sox owner John Henry said in an e-mail to the Boston Globe that Farrell would be going to Toronto.
Farrell was Cleveland’s player development director for five years and Boston’s pitching coach the past four seasons. He pitched in the majors for parts of eight seasons with Cleveland, California and Detroit. His final season was 1996.
