EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Nick Folk kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the New York Jets a 3-0 lead over the Minnesota Vikings in the rain-delayed Monday night game.
The Jets won the coin toss and deferred, kicking off to the Vikings.
Minnesota could not get untracked on the opening drive, picking up three penalties before punting to New York. Randy Moss, in his first play with the Vikings, completed a flea-flicker pass to Brett Favre that was wiped out by an illegible-receiver penalty.
The Jets started fast, with Sanchez hitting Braylon Edwards with a 31-yard pass on their first play from scrimmage. The drive stalled after that.
The Vikings also struggled on their second possession, with Drew Coleman bursting through to sack Favre for a 7-yard loss. Minnesota punted from deep in its own end, giving New York excellent field position at the Vikings 40-yard line.
LaDainian Tomlinson had runs to the left of 12 and 17 yards as New York advanced deep into Minnesota territory. In three tries from the 11, the Jets could only move 4 yards. New York settled for 25-yard field goal by Folk with 4:55 remaining.
Favre shook hands with Sanchez, his replacement as Jets quarterback, when the teams came out for warmups.
The start of the game was twice delayed by heavy rain and lightning. The original 8:30 p.m. start was initially pushed back to 8:50 before being rescheduled for 9:15.
Fans in exposed seats were urged to take cover. They were allowed back at 8:55.
