CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians have sent infielder Andy Marte to Triple-A Columbus, making him eligible for free agency.
Marte was once tabbed as the club’s future third baseman, but has been a disappointment since he was acquired as part of a 2006 trade with Boston. The Indians have designated him for assignment before, but he went unclaimed.
Marte batted .227 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 80 games. He also spent time on the disabled list with an abdominal injury. The 27-year-old also pitched a scoreless inning against the Yankees in July, and committed three errors in one inning against Boston in June.
In 277 career games with Cleveland, Marte hit .224 with 20 homers and 92 RBIs.
