Regarding Michael Hoxie’s Tuesday letter to the editor, “Unions undermining the American economy”: Unions were created because they were needed. Over the years, they have at many times proved their worth.

This is no longer true. Despite their historic and significant contributions to how Americans value a proper balance-of-power equation between management and labor, unions are now a net detriment in the struggle for American companies to compete in a global economy.
