OPINION:
Central to most politicians’ governing ethic is the belief that the government knows better how to live your life than you do. This manifests itself most obviously in the so-called health care “reform” bill passed this year, which foists a government-approved health insurance plan on those of us who do not necessarily want health insurance.
But there are other examples that are not so obvious. No Child Left Behind is the government’s claim to know better than your local school board, superintendent or PTA what is best for your children. Laws prohibiting smoking in restaurants and bars are the government’s claim to know better than you the quality of the air you should breathe. Fuel-economy regulations for cars are the government’s claim to know better than you how much gasoline you should use. The more the government asserts its superiority over the decisions in our lives, the weaker, less confident people we become.
