BERLIN (AP) - Thousands of fans have cheered the return of Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel to Berlin.

The 23-year-old German celebrated his victory by driving in front of the capital’s landmark Brandenburg Gate on Saturday.

German news agency DAPD quoted the Red Bull driver as saying his “dreams have become true.” The youngest ever F1 champion said his goal was to successfully defend his title next season.

Organizers said about 85,000 people turned out to greet Vettel despite freezing temperatures. Police did not give an independent crowd estimate.

Vettel won the title on Nov. 14 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
