PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded left-hander Zach Duke to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a player to be named.
After designating Duke for assignment on Friday, the Pirates had 10 days to trade or release him. Duke was 8-15 with a 5.72 ERA in 29 starts last season. He has allowed 443 hits over the last two seasons, the sixth most in the majors.
Duke is 37-68 with a 4.80 ERA since debuting with an 8-2 record and 1.81 ERA in 2005. The Pirates chose not to bring back the Duke, who was eligible for arbitration, partly because they projected he might be awarded as much as $6 million.
