NEW YORK (AP) - Gawker Media said Wednesday that it is pleased Sarah Palin’s publisher has settled its lawsuit alleging copyright infringement, avoiding “lengthy litigation.”
HarperCollins sued Gawker on Friday for posting leaked images from Palin’s “America by Heart,” which went on sale Tuesday. Gawker pulled the images over the weekend after a federal judge granted HarperCollins an injunction pending a Nov. 30 hearing.
The publisher, which had sought financial damages, said Tuesday that Gawker had agreed to keep the images off its website. HarperCollins declined to give further details of the settlement, but said in a statement that it was “gratified.”
“HarperCollins’ decision to file suit against us and seek a temporary restraining order generated a good deal of press for Ms. Palin’s book in advance of its publication,” Gawker said in a statement Wednesday. “Now that the book is out and destined to appear on the best-seller list, we’re pleased that HarperCollins proposed settling this case as is, thus avoiding lengthy litigation for both sides.”
“America by Heart” was No. 10 on Amazon.com’s best-seller list Wednesday morning.
Palin, the former governor of Alaska, was the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket in 2008.
