SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (AP) - Dominican health officials say they have found the first confirmed case of cholera in the country, which neighbors Haiti.

The health department says the case was found in a Haitian citizen who recently returned from his home country, where a cholera epidemic there has killed more than 1,000 people and hospitalized more than 16,700.

The Dominican Republic is home to nearly 10 million people. Like Haiti, it had never had a confirmed case of cholera until this year.
