IRVING, TEXAS (AP) - Jason Garrett has kicked off his first full day as interim coach of the Dallas Cowboys by running practice and putting two key players on injured reserve.

Garrett hit the practice field at team headquarters for a midday workout Wednesday. He was there in time to watch the special teams go through their drills, something he didn’t have to do when he was the offensive coordinator. He was promoted Monday when Wade Phillips was fired following a 1-7 start.

Garrett got fist bumps and handshakes from several defensive players as they took the field. He also made a point of walking through the defense during stretches. Media was not allowed to watch the rest of practice.

The Cowboys put defensive end Marcus Spears and kick returner Akwasi Owusu-Ansah on season-ending injured reserve. Linemen Jeremy Clark and Jimmy Saddler-McQueen were signed for depth on the banged-up defense.
