NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the New York Yankees are close to acquiring pitcher Kerry Wood from the Cleveland Indians.

The Yankees likely would send Cleveland a player to be named, the person said, speaking Saturday on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized.

A day earlier, the Yankees obtained outfielder Austin Kearns from the Indians for a player to be named.
