NEW YORK (AP) - Landline and cell phones were unable to complete calls in part of New York because of a malfunction in Verizon’s network on Monday, the company said.

Equipment that connects calls on the East side of Manhattan between 20th and 40th Streets was at fault. There were problems getting calls through to phones outside this area as well.

Verizon Communications Inc. spokeswoman Linda Laughlin said that the problem was fixed late in the afternoon, though full service was not yet restored.

The outage affected cell phones from other carriers as well, because they connect through the wired network.

Verizon had no estimate on the number of customers affected.
