Republican leader Newt Gingrich said Sunday he is serious about a 2012 presidential run, not just talking about a bid to keep his name in the media to sell books and other money-making aspects of the Gingrich brand.
“Assume that,” Mr. Gingrich, a former House speaker, said on “Fox News Sunday.” He also said he will make his decision after the November midterm elections, likely in February or March 2011.
“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace pointed out that Mr. Gingrich pulled out of the 2008 race after years of saying he would run. Mr. Gingrich replied that Mr. Wallace rightfully could criticize him for doing likewise this year, but only after the midterms.
Among the other Republicans who have been mentioned as potential 2012 candidates are former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. First-time candidates include Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and South Dakota Sen. John Thune.
