HANGING UP: Verizon Communications Inc. said it lost $198 million in the second quarter due to a buyout for 11,000 workers, continuing a year of workforce reductions.

NEW CONNECTIONS: Verizon Wireless did well, adding 665,000 customers under contract, even in the face of competition from AT&T Inc. a new iPhone.

LOOKING AHEAD: Verizon expects earnings of $1.05 to $1.10 per share for the remainer of the year. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were looking for $1.06.
