ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND (AP) - The British Open has been suspended because of stiff winds that are making conditions unplayable.
Tournament officials halted play at 2:40 p.m. local time Friday, shortly after Tiger Woods teed off. Even though the day turned sunny, the gusts were so severe that they were causing balls to move on the greens.
The suspension marked another turn in a wild day of weather at the Old Course. It went back and forth between heavy rains and bursts of sunshine. Play carried on through the inclement weather, but finally the wind brought a halt to play.
The players marked their balls and waited to the gusts to ease.
