SAN’A, Yemen (AP) — Gunmen using mortars and rocket propelled grenades attacked two adjoining intelligence buildings in southern Yemen, a Yemeni official said Wednesday.

Deputy governor of the southern Abyan province, Saleh el-Shamsi, said one guard and one militant died in the attack on Wednesday morning. He said masked gunmen in two separate groups tried to storm the buildings of the intelligence headquarters in the provincial capital, Zinjibar.

Mr. El-Shamsi said they tried to “take over the two buildings” but that Yemeni guards confronted them and “foiled their plans.”

A security official said seven militants were detained. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Al Qaeda has stepped up attacks across Yemen, including in restive Abyan.
