ARLINGTON, TEXAS (AP) - The Texas Rangers have made what they called a “substantial” offer to Cliff Lee during a face-to-face meeting with the pitcher in the Arkansas office of his agent.
Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg said after Thursday’s meeting that Lee was given a “menu of options” in an attempt to persuade him to stay with Texas.
The New York Yankees added a year to their offer earlier in the day, proposing a seven-year contract for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner.
Greenberg said the trip to Arkansas was prompted by Boston’s $142 million, seven-year agreement with outfielder Carl Crawford, which changed market dynamics.
