Everyone has his or her own idea of the ideal retirement. For some people, an active lifestyle of fishing, golf, tennis, swimming and hiking represents a dream come true. For others, spending time reading, in quiet conversation with friends or taking classes in a wide range of subjects would be perfect. At Shenandoah at Lake Frederick, an active-adult community restricted to residents age 55 and older, all of these activities and more are close at hand.

Under development by Oxbridge Development, Shenandoah will have 2,200 homes surrounding Lake Frederick, a 120-acre lake that will provide the focal point for the community. Midway between Front Royal and Winchester, Va., Lake Frederick is approximately 90 minutes from the District. The 942-acre community will include condominiums, duplexes, town homes and single-family homes.

In addition to the lake, Shenandoah residents can enjoy the 35,000-square-foot Clubhouse Village complex, which has views of the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as the lake. Built to replicate Adirondack-style vacation properties, the complex includes casual dining, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a media center, a fitness center and tennis courts as well as spaces for classes and social activities. Residents will find multiple golf courses, vineyards, parks, historic sites and Skyline Drive close to Shenandoah, plus the Appalachian Trail, the State Arboretum, Skyline Caverns and mountain streams. Several shopping centers and restaurants also are nearby.

Winchester Homes is building Adirondack- and Craftsman-style single-family homes at Shenandoah, each with a first-floor master suite. The homes have asphalt roof shingles with a 30-year warranty, a stone water table, professional landscaping, an antique bronze mailbox and a two-car garage. The homes have been planned with universal design features, such as a zero-step entry, lever door handles, rocker switches on the light fixtures, wide hallways and doorways, easy-to-read programmable thermostats and first-floor master suites.

Standard interior features include 9-foot ceilings on the main level, hardwood flooring in the foyer, wall-to-wall carpeting in the main living areas, ceramic tile flooring in the baths, 42-inch oak cabinets in the kitchen, a rough-in for a bath on the lower level, high-tech wiring, pre-wiring for a security system, recessed lighting, and gas heat and water heater.

The homes have 1,922 to 2,531 finished square feet, with two bedrooms and two or 2 1/2 baths. Base prices range from $299,900 to $379,900, with homeowner association fees of $285 per month.

The Shadwell model, with 2,288 square feet, is priced from $349,900. This model has a front porch leading into a foyer with French doors that open into the study. On the opposite side of the study is a formal dining room. The foyer opens into a dramatic rotunda with a tray ceiling. Nearby is a powder room.

At the back of this level are an open two-story family room with a wall of windows, a breakfast area with sliding glass doors to the backyard, and a center-island kitchen. Buyers can extend this space with a sunroom or room extensions.

The first-floor master suite has a walk-in closet and a private bath with a double-sink vanity and a shower with a seat. Buyers can add a luxury master bath with a soaking tub and separate shower. This level also has a second bedroom with a walk-in closet and a private full bath.

A laundry room, a pantry and several closets complete the main level.

Buyers can add a second floor with a loft overlooking the family room and a third bedroom with a walk-in closet and full bath. The lower level also can be completed with a recreation room, a full bath and storage space.
