OPINION:
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) shares Ted Nugent’s concern for wildlife threatened by feral and free-roaming cats, which is why we strongly support the humane capture of feral cats and their removal from the streets, fields and woods (“The time for kitty killing has come,” Commentary, Monday).
PETA’s policy is also based on concern for cats that, in their struggle to survive outdoors, face many dangers. Feral cats don’t die gently - they incur ghastly injuries and infections, contract deadly contagious diseases, are hit by cars and are attacked by dogs, wildlife or cruel people like Mr. Nugent.
Instead of breaking the law by “blasting” stray cats and urging everyone he knows to do the same, Mr. Nugent should be encouraging people to have all cats spayed or neutered, keep cats safely indoors and take stray or unwanted cats to shelters instead of abandoning them or cruelly killing them.
