A significant number of Democrats are unhappy about President Obama’s willingness to deal with Republicans on taxes. Many think that caving to GOP demands now will guarantee two more years of painful compromises, so they are demanding a showdown or perhaps even a smack-down.

Given the midterm elections changed the political power structure of Washington, Mr. Obama’s compliant attitude should not be unexpected. What is baffling is that the Tea Party, which was forged from anti-deficit fervor, is not calling for GOP heads to roll over tax cuts that must be paid for with deficit spending.
